Maria del Buen suceso de la purificacion

Quito Pilgrimage

Appearing to Mariana of Jesus, the Virgin Mary commanded that a statue be made as She appeared. Completed miraculously in 1611, the Holy Virgin ordered that this statue be placed in the Abbess’ chair so that She may rule and protect this convent. For this purpose, She took the name in religion of Maria of Buen Suceso of the Purification. She said this title will be the support and safeguard of the Faith during this time of crisis.

This pilgrimage is a novena of prayer to Maria of Buen Suceso of the Purification. Each day begins with a dawn procession from the Shrine of Our Lady walking to the various religious communities of the historic center. Holy Mass is offered daily. An outing to various sites of the historic city center is arranged for each day. A conference is given each evening. There is a perfect blend of prayer and recreational free time.

General Information

This Pilgrimage is to the city of Quito, Ecuador, to visit the miraculous statue of Maria del Buen Suceso de la Purificacion.

January 23 – February 2 are the dates for the pilgrimage, as it centers on a novena in preparation for the Feast of the Purification.

We keep a novena leading up to the feast in imitation of the original observance in 1611. The religious of the city preached for nine days in preparation for the Feast. Various religious orders were mandated by the bishop which demonstrated he understood the importance and meaning of the miraculous statue.

While this custom has ceased, our morning rosary processions seek to revive this spirit by going to the various religious houses of the city.
